FRP chemical storage tank

With the increasing demand for safe and efficient storage solutions in global industries such as chemical, water treatment, papermaking, and pharmaceuticals, the specialized production of corrosion-resistant storage tanks is accelerating. We recently announced that a batch of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) storage tanks, built to customer standards, is being manufactured in our modern factory in Hebei Jiarui FRP Co., Ltd. These chemical storage tanks utilize glass fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) as the core material and are specifically designed to meet the long-term corrosion challenges posed by highly alkaline media such as sodium hydroxide. They are expected to be completed and delivered to domestic and international customers soon.

Sodium hydroxide (also known as caustic soda) is a highly alkaline inorganic compound widely used in pH adjustment, pulp production, textile processing, food cleaning, and pharmaceutical synthesis. However, due to its strong corrosiveness and hygroscopicity, traditional metal storage tanks are prone to corrosion, leakage, and even structural failure after prolonged contact with sodium hydroxide solutions, posing safety hazards and high maintenance costs for businesses. Therefore, selecting the correct storage tank material and manufacturing process has become a crucial link in ensuring production safety and operational efficiency.

Advantage 1: FRP Material

FRP composite materials are currently recognized in the industry as one of the optimal solutions for storing caustic alkalis. Compared to traditional carbon steel or stainless steel storage tanks, FRP chemical storage tanks have three core advantages.

Firstly, superior corrosion resistance.

FRP storage tanks use vinyl ester resin combined with a multi-layer glass fiber winding process, which can withstand the erosion of highly corrosive media such as sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid, and sulfuric acid for a long time, with a service life of over 20 years. FRP will not rust or pit, and its inert material ensures that the purity of the stored medium is not contaminated.

Secondly, lightweight and high strength, facilitating transportation and installation.

The density of FRP material is approximately 1.5 to 2.0, only 1/4 to 1/5 that of carbon steel, but its tensile strength is close to or even exceeds that of carbon steel, and its specific strength is comparable to that of high-grade alloy steel. The weight of an FRP storage tank of the same volume can be reduced by about 70%, significantly reducing the difficulty of transportation and hoisting.

Thirdly, low maintenance costs and outstanding long-term economic benefits.

Compared to carbon steel storage tanks that require regular anti-corrosion lining repair and anode replacement, GRP storage tanks require no additional lining protection, reducing maintenance costs by approximately 60%. This significant reduction in total life-cycle cost makes Fiberflass a wise long-term investment choice for many chemical companies.

Advantage 2: Professional-Grade Customized Tank Production, Strictly Adhering to International Standards

The batch of sodium hydroxide storage tanks currently being produced in our factory strictly adheres to multiple international design and testing standards, ensuring that each unit possesses extremely high structural reliability and sealing safety.

Structurally, the tank wall thickness is precisely calculated based on the stored liquid level, pressure, and medium characteristics to meet customer design specifications, and the tank stability under internal and external pressures is comprehensively verified. The molding process employs integral winding molding technology, eliminating weak points in the welds and preventing leakage risks at the source. An optional UV-resistant gel coat can be fitted to the tank surface, effectively delaying aging caused by long-term outdoor exposure.

Regarding safety accessories, the product can be equipped with components such as level gauges, pressure gauges, manholes, inlet/outlet ports, and vent valves according to customer needs. Considering the low freezing point of sodium hydroxide (a 50% concentration solution may crystallize below approximately 12°C), electric heating or steam jacket insulation systems are also available as options to ensure the fluidity of the medium and operational continuity under low-temperature conditions.

Our company manufactures sodium hydroxide storage tanks with volumes ranging from 0.5 cubic meters to over 100 cubic meters, and diameters from DN600 to DN4000. They support both vertical and horizontal structures, flexibly adapting to the space constraints of different scenarios such as chemical plants, wastewater treatment plants, and power plants.

Advantage 3: Multi-Industry Applications

Sodium hydroxide storage tanks have extremely wide applications. The following three scenarios have a particularly urgent need for GRP storage tanks:

First, the water treatment and wastewater treatment industry. In municipal drinking water treatment and industrial wastewater treatment, sodium hydroxide is used for pH adjustment, neutralizing acidic water quality, and ensuring that effluent indicators meet environmental emission standards. Meanwhile, in wastewater treatment plants, caustic soda is often added in conjunction with sodium hypochlorite and other agents to achieve water purification and disinfection.

Secondly, in chemical and petroleum processing. In petroleum refining and chemical synthesis production lines, sodium hydroxide is widely used for acid-base neutralization, byproduct separation, and pipeline cleaning. The high corrosion resistance and sealing integrity of fiberglass storage tanks ensure the safety and stability of continuous production.

Thirdly, in the food, paper, and pharmaceutical industries. In food processing, CIP (Clean-in-Place) systems use hot alkali solutions to efficiently sterilize and descale pipelines and equipment; heat-resistant PPH (Polypropylene Hydrate) storage tanks have become standard equipment in this process. In the paper industry, caustic soda is used to decompose lignin to extract fiber; large alkali storage tanks are an indispensable component of pulping production lines. The pharmaceutical synthesis field also requires corrosion-resistant storage tanks to contain high-purity alkaline reaction media.

With increasingly stringent safety regulations and the widespread adoption of green chemistry concepts, corrosion-resistant, long-life, and leak-free FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic) storage tanks are rapidly replacing traditional metal tanks, becoming the preferred solution for upgrading chemical storage in various industries.
